Subject: Lord Kelvin Adam Smith Student Scholarship in Technical Art History
Lord Kelvin Adam Smith Student Scholarship in Technical Art History The Department of History of Art at the University of Glasgow, in collaboration with the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC), is seeking to award a fully funded PhD student scholarship starting in the academic year 2007-2008. The four-year student scholarship is funded through the Lord Kelvin Adam Smith Research programme. The Kelvin/Smith postgraduate will work on a specific project: '17th Century Antwerp Studio Practice, an interdisciplinary approach', carried out with the support of Glasgow Museums, National Galleries of Scotland, and Hunterian Art Gallery. The Postgraduate Project should entail a thorough art historical and technical analysis of the works involved, including preliminary stages such as drawings and oil sketches. The research project should address the characteristics of Antwerp practice by combining art historical and technical research data. The latter will be obtained by lead isotope and elemental analyses of pigments, identification of binding media, investigation of underdrawings (infrared reflectography), and microscopic examination of the paint surface. Also authentication of these works (attribution, dating) will be greatly augmented by the application of scientific research methods. SUERC gives access to unique, state of the art analytical methodology and expertise. Training will be given in techniques hosted by SUERC such as stable isotope analysis, mass spectrometry, luminescence and radiocarbon dating. The project will be coordinated by the History of Art Department and will add to the technical art history programme. The recipient of the scholarship should have a degree in art history and an MA in easel painting conservation, or cognate area. Candidates with a science degree and an MA in painting conservation or cognate area can also apply. Research will be supervised jointly by Dr Erma Hermens in the Department of History of Art at University of Glasgow, and Prof. Dr. Tony Fallick and Dr. Rob Ellam, Scottish Universities Environmental Research centre.
