Temporary Assistant Conservator of Objects Peabody Museum Harvard University Grade 56 The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University is seeking applicants to fill a temporary 18-month full-time assistant conservator position. Duties and Responsibilities: This position will contribute to the documentation, conservation stabilization and rehousing of the Museum's large Mesoamerican plaster cast collection. The assistant conservator will carry out all activities necessary for the safe care and handling, documentation, condition assessment and stabilization of these late 19th century three-dimensional objects. Work collaboratively with the Museum's conservation and collection management staff and other project staff. Attend and contribute to project planning meetings and documentation. Perform assessment of the collection and treatment of at risk casts. Train and supervise designated project staff assistants. Required Education, Experience and Skills: Graduate degree in art conservation or equivalent experience with object specialization, with a minimum of 1 to 2 years working under the direction of a senior conservator. Demonstrated prior experience conducting condition assessments and writing technical reports. Demonstrated excellence in performing conservation treatments. Preference will be given to applicants who have good working experience implementing treatments to stabilize archaeological materials, sculpture and/or plaster cast objects. Essential skills and background include experience working with large format three-dimensional objects and in designing proper housings for research and storage. Working knowledge of chemistry and materials science with good understanding of chemical and physical processes of deterioration required. Strong organizational and planning skills, ability to establish priorities, achieve goals and meet project deadlines. Excellent oral and written communication with prior supervisory experience. Good problem solving skills and an ability to maintain focus in a busy lab; good team leadership and ability to work independently. Ability to assess job performance.
