American Academy of Bookbinding A Professional School of Fine Binding and Conservation Telluride, Colorado Founded in 1993, The American Academy of Bookbinding with campuses in Telluride, Colorado and Ann Arbor, Michigan offer intensive courses for both beginning and advance students in conservation, fine leather binding and related subjects. Degree programs are available. The following are conservation courses for 2008: March 16-21, 2007 Restoration of Cloth and Leather Bindings Instructor: Don Etherington Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan This course covers restoration and repair of cloth and leather bindings using the combination of Japanese paper and linen for re-backing and corner repair with leather as an alternative. Students should bring 4 books (two cloth and two leather) in need of treatment and/or repair to work on during class. No prerequisite is required for this class. April 21, 2007 - May 2, 2007 Book Conservation: Finishing Instructor: Don Etherington Location: Telluride, Colorado Students will be introduced to blind and gold tooling on leather covered practice panels. Using handle letters we will practice layouts for spine lettering, also the use of rolls and line pallets. The use of real gold foil will also be practiced. The second week students that have completed bindings will now tool these books in gold leaf with some blind tooling together with some simple decoration on the front and back boards. Leather label preparation and final polishing will be executed. The use of the stamping machine with type will also be practiced, alongside the use of the type holder.
