Conservator of Paintings, Canadian Art Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) Toronto, Canada Temporary Full Time position, up to November 2008 Reporting to the Deputy Director of Collections and Head of Conservation, this temporary position will focus on the installation of the Canadian collection for the reopening of the AGO in 2008. The Conservator of Paintings, Canadian Art is responsible for prolonging the physical and aesthetic life of works of art through documentation, preventive care, conservation treatment, research and education. This position is responsible for promoting and advocating the preservation of works in the collection or in the temporary custody of the Gallery. The incumbent will be responsible for providing advice and expertise concerning the aesthetic, conceptual and physical characteristics of works of art. In addition, this position will be involved in active loans, acquisitions and exhibition programs. Canadian art is a significant focus for the AGO. Our collections include 14,000 Canadian paintings, including traditional historical paintings, modern paintings, and a wide range of contemporary art material dating up to 1980. Our ideal candidate will have a Masters degree in Conservation from a recognized University or College, plus five (5) years related experience with paintings, in an art museum, or a combination of both. In addition, the candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team, possess an excellent knowledge of conservation principles, practices, materials, and techniques, in order to perform superior treatments. Excellent knowledge of health and safety legislation, regulations and practices, and the Code of Ethics and Guidance for Practice of the Canadian Association for Conservation of Cultural Property (CAC) and of the Canadian Association of Professional Conservators (CAPC) is required.
