The National Library of New Zealand is looking for an experienced
book conservator to fill a temporary position in our Conservation
Services unit created by a secondment. Weire a small, friendly and
well-established team of seven other conservators working in the
paper, archives, sound and photographic materials speciality areas,
as well as technical and administrative support staff.

The Conservation Services unit is part of Preservation Services,
which includes the Copying and Digital Services unit providing a
range of photographic, microfilming and digital imaging services and
programs.

The Senior Book Conservator has particular responsibility for the
co-ordination of conservation management programs and treatment
projects for the published heritage collections of the Alexander
Turnbull Library including the Special Printed Collections, and the
New Zealand and Pacific Collections.

Preservation advice is also provided for National Library General
and Crown collections. As one of a small handful of book
conservators in New Zealand, the Senior Book Conservator is also
expected to provide support for the programs of the National
Preservation Office and provide advice and information in response
to enquiries from members of the public.

Activities include:

    Planning and implementing annual conservation management
    programmes for collections in consultation with other
    conservators, curators and librarians

    Providing treatment, condition assessment, materials testing,
    and special packaging services

    Exhibition support and preparation

    Contributing to the management and development of the laboratory
    and unit

    Training and supervision of technicians, contract workers and
    interns

    Training and advice for other National Library staff

    Participation in disaster planning and salvage programs and
    projects

    Providing advice on conservation to external organisations and
    individuals

The person we are looking for in this position should have:

    At least 2 years practical experience in book conservation

    Specific professional training or comparable experience in the
    conservation of books and paper

    Experience in the conservation management of bound collections

    Experience in project management

    An understanding of and support for the broader preservation
    perspective

    Enjoyment of the team approach to working relationships

    Good written and oral communication skills in English

A relocation allowance is negotiable for the successful candidate,
should that individual be currently living outside of New Zealand.

Salary:  NZ$52,000  -  $57,000 dependent on experience Applications
