Book Conservator
(2 positions) Ref: S&C00054
The British Library
London, St Pancras

The Collection Care department of the British Library, which
comprises some 200 staff, is responsible for the preservation,
conservation, storage and security of the collections. The British
Library's collection of 150 million items is made up of items from
across the centuries and across cultures.

Working in a team of conservators within the Conservation section of
Collection Care, you will be required to carry out conservation
treatments to a wide range of library and archival materials, which
may include books, manuscripts, archives, maps, prints and drawings,
illuminations on parchment and paper, and photographs from a range
of different cultures. You will be expected to work with minimal
supervision and to have the skills and knowledge to plan and manage
your work to ensure that production deadlines are met. You must be
able to communicate effectively with people at all levels, and be
able to keep clear, detailed and accurate records of all treatments
undertaken. Experience of working with large format items is
desirable for the Paper Conservator post. Knowledge of book
structures and experience of book conservation is desirable for the
Book Conservator posts.

Minimum requirements for all three posts include recent, practical,
hands-on experience in conservation, a degree in conservation
studies or equivalent knowledge and skill sets, the ability to
diagnose conservation problems and to develop options for the
solutions of those problems.

A high level of manual dexterity is required (with the ability to
treat fragile and delicate materials), along with knowledge of
materials chemistry and the properties, behaviours and interaction
of a wide range of organic and inorganic materials, and an
understanding of the deterioration of materials associated with the
Library's collections. You will also have knowledge of the ethics of
conservation, and an ability to apply ethics to treatments of items
in the context of a research collection that is accessed by readers
and researchers.

The British Library supports PACR accreditation and welcomes
applications from accredited conservators.
