In my opinion, contacting the Nakashima Studio as Mr. O'Brien has
suggested would be an important step. If I remember correctly from a
Discovery TV learning production, his daughter and son are
continuing the business.

Perhaps there is catalogue number on the table whereas the precise
coating could be verified.  I would not recommend cleaning with
steel wool as you would most likely contaminate the surface with
particles of steel wool becoming embedded in the coating.  Again, as
Mr O'Brien stated, a cleaning, after solvent testing would be in
order.
