Paper Preparator Regular Full Time Position Intermuseum Conservation Association (ICA) The Intermuseum Conservation Association (ICA) <URL:http://www.ica-artconservation.org>, a regional not-for-profit art conservation center established in 1952, is seeking a highly skilled Paper Preparator to join our conservation lab located on the Westside of Cleveland, just minutes from downtown. The preparator will work under the supervision of the paper conservators, and prepare paper-based artwork for display (mounting and framing) using conservation-quality methods and materials. They will also assist paper conservators with lab duties including ordering all necessary lab materials, paperwork, and client services. Essential Job Duties: Mounting, framing and re-housing of paper-based materials (prints, drawings, documents, etc.) using conservation-quality techniques and materials. Under supervision of the conservator, create estimates, proposals, condition and treatment reports for projects. Order and maintain inventory of lab supplies and mounting materials. Help to maintain organization and cleanliness of lab space. Consult directly with clients regarding mounting, framing, or rehousing needs. Construct protective enclosures for re-housing; pack artwork for shipping or delivery to client. Deliver and hang artwork on-site as necessary. Assist paper conservators and other staff as necessary. Maintain the lab, prepare materials, and assist with special projects. May assist paper conservators with a broad range of preservation and conservation related activities, such as paper repair, surface cleaning, and flattening, dependent on demonstrated manual skills and knowledge in area. Minimum requirements: Bachelor's degree (preferably in an arts-related field) or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary. Demonstrated superior manual skills and ability to work with high degree of precision/accuracy. Excellent communication skills. Ability to follow directions, work independently, and maintain established quality standards. Strong organization skills, including ability to work within established priorities and work collaboratively. Must have significant previous matting and framing experience, preferably in a museum or preservation setting. Knowledge of conservation-quality methods and materials preferred. Demonstrated ability to work knowledgeably and independently on variety of mounting and framing methods. Training and/or experience in the care and handling of paper-based materials; interest/knowledge in preservation preferred. Interest and knowledge in paper-based fine art (prints, drawings), historic framing styles, packing and handling of artwork preferred. Familiarity with computers is necessary, especially Microsoft applications and Filemaker Pro.
