The Icon Paintings Group Christmas talk. Cleaning the Uncleanable: Treatment of Millais's Hearts are Trumps Wednesday 19 December 2007 Doors open at 6pm for a 6: 30pm start. Icon Offices, 1 London Bridge, Downstream Building, SE1 9BG Natasha Duff from Tate will be talking about the recent treatment of Millais's 'Hearts are Trumps', prepared for the current Tate Britain exhibition.'Hearts are Trumps' is currently on display as part of the Millais retrospective at Tate Britain following treatment of the painting and frame. Since acquisition in 1945 the painting has suffered from poor aesthetic condition due to discoloured surface coatings. Much like Turner and Reynolds, Millais's paintings have a reputation for being difficult to clean, due in part to the way the artist layered and mixed resin in with his oil media. Trepidation at the start of treatment led to extensive testing and analysis. This talk addresses the dilemmas tackled and decisions made as part of such a complex cleaning treatment.
