Chief Conservator/Deputy Director for Collections Management Virginia Museum of Fine Arts The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts seeks an experienced conservator to manage the Collections Management and Conservation Division of the museum. Reporting to the VMFA Director, this position will oversee the operations of five departments, including Registration, Photography, Photographic Resources, Painting Conservation and Objects Conservation. Specific guidance, direction and support is provided to departmental heads in the areas of policy and procedure, special projects, work flow, long-range goals, budget development, purchasing and staffing. As a member of the Senior Management team, this position will represent the priorities and concerns of the division; provide input to discussions and decisions on a wide range of institutional projects; and assist with fundraising activities. Additionally, the Chief Conservator will have responsibility for conserving art within his/her own specialization, conducting research and contributing to scholarly publications and other educational efforts. Applicants should have an advanced degree in art conservation, from a recognized graduate conservation training program, PhD preferred, plus a minimum of 5-10 years experience working in a Conservation department of a museum. The successful candidate will have significant knowledge of and experience in conservation and collections management standards, techniques and practices and proven supervisory, leadership, planning, organization and project management skills. The candidate should have experience in budget management, fundraising and grant writing. He/she must possess the ability to prioritize and deal with many projects and assignments at once and the ability to analyze, assess and make recommendations and decisions based upon a sophisticated understanding of art museum conservation and collections management practices. He/she must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically, both orally and in writing, with a variety of museum professionals, patrons and donors. Demonstrated knowledge of emerging technologies related to collections management is a plus. A security background check will be required.
