Senior Book Conservator Etherington Conservation Services West Hayward, California Facility Etherington Conservation Services - West (ECS-CA) is opening its West Coast Regional operation in its Hayward, CA facility in mid January 2008. ECS-CA is looking for qualified book conservators to staff the facility. The start up operation will initially consist of a staff of three (3) with the possibility of future expansion. ECS-CA will handle rare book materials from institutions and private clients in the western region of the United States. The candidate for ECS-CA will be required to perform a variety of conservation treatments in a variety of styles and techniques, dependent upon the treatment needs of the materials. All conservation work performed by ECS-CA will conform to AIC standards of practice. Qualified applicants for the position must be able to conduct and assist in conservation examinations and treatments as well as undertake preservation initiatives for client institutions. Responsibilities for this position include the treatment of a wide variety of bound materials, including incunabula, period bindings, modern firsts, and albums, in bindings of leather, vellum, cloth, and paper. The applicant must have excellent hand and organizational skills and be capable of performing the following tasks: * Consulting with clients * Supervise conservation staff members * Compiling time-based cost estimates * Determining and completing prescribed courses of treatment * Documenting treatments in adherence to current ethical standards * Handling of fragile books and paper objects * Working efficiently while meeting conservation standards * Meeting deadlines and assists in coordinating workflow A qualified candidate for this position will hold a Master's degree from a recognized conservation training program with a minimum of three years post-graduate experience in bookbinding and conservation or have a comparable combination of professional training and experience treating bound material. Good verbal skills, attention to detail, and an ability to work with others are necessary. Knowledge of preservation theory, the standards and ethics of conservation practice, and historical book structures are required.
