Conservator, Paintings Specialist Asian Art Museum of San Francisco The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced paintings conservator to conserve and restore Asian works of art in this world-renowned collection. The incumbent will perform skilled conservation work in the preservation and restoration of works of art on cloth and paper including, but not limited to, screens, scrolls, banner paintings, Indian miniatures, Japanese woodblock prints, album leaves, photos, and contemporary artworks from various Asian countries. In order to perform the highest level of complex treatments on important works of art, the incumbent must have an in-depth knowledge of the physical properties and aging characteristics of the materials, and the effects of past and future restorations. The nature of this highly skilled work requires manual dexterity, intense concentration, and aesthetic sensibility in addition to excellent organizational skills. The incumbent, serving as a lead professional in the Conservation Laboratory, must have the ability to prioritize work, coordinate with preparators and other museum staff, and sequence projects in order to meet agreed upon deadlines. Minimum Qualifications Master of Arts Degree in Art Conservation from a recognized college or university, OR Master of Arts Degree in Art History with a Certificate in Conservation from a recognized Conservation Training Program; and Five (5) years of verifiable conservation experience, beyond the degree or certificate, with the techniques, materials and equipment used in the conservation of works on cloth and paper; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Knowledge of the technology and materials of Asian works on cloth and paper and of the chemical and physical processes of their deterioration. Knowledge of the procedures relating to the examination and the preventative and corrective treatment of works on cloth and paper. Knowledge of the environmental requirements and of controls for handling, storage, exhibition, and travel of works on cloth and paper. Ability to write technical reports in an understandable, clear, and concise manner, utilizing appropriate punctuation and grammar. Ability to examine works of art and determine their current state of preservation for new acquisitions, loans, and exhibitions. Ability to provide sound advice and recommendations regarding the design of facilities to ensure the proper display, storage and treatment of works of art on paper. Ability to make clear oral presentations to the general public as well as to technical specialists. Ability to maintain ongoing effective working relationships with museum staff, colleagues in the field, and the public; demonstrate good judgment, flexibility and resourcefulness; negotiate for the benefit of the art. Ability to give direction to subordinate conservation personnel, and administer and supervise the department in the absence of the Head of Conservation. Compensation: $57-69K annually with excellent benefit package.
