Subject: A death
We are very sad to announce the death of Caroline K. Keck on Monday, December 17, 2007; she had just turned 99 in October. Mrs. Keck and her husband Sheldon were instrumental in the founding of the NYU Conservation Center in 1960 and the Cooperstown Graduate Programs in Cooperstown, NY in 1970 where they taught more than 15 classes of students before the program relocated to Buffalo, NY in 1987. Mrs. Keck was a tireless advocate for public awareness about the profession of conservation and wrote several books and pamphlets aimed at lay readers. Many conservators were privileged to receive regular salty letters featuring her strong opinions. In her last weeks she wrote a number of letters expressing a wish to donate her hot table and other possessions to found a museum of early 20th-century conservation, ideally in the Midwest. She is survived by the couple's two sons, Albert and Larry; Larry has continued in his parents' profession. Rebecca Rushfield notes: "it brings the end to an era." More formal and lengthy obituaries will need to be prepared. Reminiscences are welcome for the FAIC oral history file also.
