Subject: Repairing historic structural timber columns
I wonder any DistList members have any experience with the repairs of historic structural timber members (columns) that have suffered from termite activities using FRP (fiber reinforced plastics) and the injection of wood epoxy [to fill] lacunae? Traditionally, one for one replacement is used by timber craftsmen especially when one is dealing with structural members. However, with FRP, which is widely used in the construction industry on concrete and steel structures, localized repair is possible whilst respecting local building codes. Gennaro Tampone and Beatrice Messeri's article "Compliance of the practice of strengthening ancient timber structure in seismic areas with the official documents on conservation", 15th International Symposium of ICOMOS International Wood Committee, Istanbul 2006, discussed FRP repairs with the question of authenticity in international charters. I would be most appreciated if members can comment on such method and its long term sustainability .
