The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria is pleased to offer the following 6-day immersion opportunity for professionals and volunteers working in museums, heritage sites, and cultural centres. The registration deadline is January 12, 2008 so sign up today Caring for Collections HA 488D (1.5 units); on-campus offering February 11-16, 2008 An examination of the physical characteristics of various types of museum collections, the ways they are affected by a range of environmental factors, and the preventive conservation and treatment policies and procedures that are utilized to ensure the safe-keeping of artifacts and specimens in storage, on exhibit, in transit, and when in use for research and programming purposes. Explore the principles and techniques of preventive care and strengthen your understanding of: * the ethics of conservation and the basic tenets that govern the conservation profession * what conservation is and of a conservator's role within an institution or with collections * collections care and the need for partnership * the history of conservation and the evolution of taking a preventive rather than an interventive approach to collections care * the need to become familiar with the various conservation resources and resource institutions available * the terminology used by conservators and conservation scientists * the agents of deterioration that can affect museum collections * the techniques used to measure and quantify the agents of deterioration * the risks affecting the collections in your care and to develop mitigative strategies for dealing with these risks * active and passive approaches to controlling the museum environment * risk management as an approach to collections care * safe handling of collections * the condition of a museum object (e.g., condition report) * the physical and chemical nature of the materials that make up museum collections * materials degradation * museum pollutants and how to create a pollutant-free environment for storage, exhibition and transportation of museum collections * the basic requirements for the safe exhibition, storage and transportation of museum collections * museum security as it relates to collections care * integrated pest management Please register by: January 12, 2008 (late registrations accepted if space permits) To register in this course please visit <URL:https://www.uvcs.uvic.ca/forms/crm/online_reg.aspx> Fee: CDN$620, including a CDN$60 materials fee (Canadian funds, credit and non-credit participation options) A CDN$160 registration deposit is required with each registration form. Instructor Susan L Maltby is a conservation consultant specializing in artifact treatment, training seminars, collection surveys, advice on collections care and management, and conservation guidelines for exhibits, museums and heritage structures. She earned a Master of Art Conservation specializing in artifact conservation from Queens University in 1984, has extensive field experience in Cyprus and Jordan as an archaeological conservator, and has written numerous articles and papers, and contributed to the academic literature on conservation technique. Previously, Susan worked as a Conservator with the Canadian Conservation Institute, a Fellow at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, and as an intern at the Klondike National Historic Site.
