Subject: Workshop on interview methodology
Interview Methodology Workshop for Conservators The International Network for the Conservation of Contemporary Art - North America (INCCA-NA) will conduct a workshop on interview methods for conservators on 21 April 2008. This pre-conference workshop at the AIC annual conference in Denver, Colorado, will present techniques for interviewing artists and performing oral histories. Dr. Richard Candida Smith, professor of History and Director, Regional Oral History Office, University of California, Berkeley, will conduct interactive sessions on interview techniques and speak about shaping questions, understanding how we speak, dynamics of the interview process, how to approach and frame important topics, and the legal and ethical issues of working with human subjects. Dr. Smith works with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art on their artist interview project. The workshop handouts will include important readings, and participants will watch demonstration videos of successful and not-so successful interview techniques, some involving artists. The sessions will also focus on goals, transcribing, and later use of interviews. Consider advance registration before the workshop fills up.
