Annual Salary:     $37,837 - $47,968

Full time position with Maryland State Government in the Special

The Maryland Historical Trust is seeking an experienced Head
Conservator of archaeological materials at the Jefferson Patterson
Park and Museum, a State Museum of Archaeology located in Calvert
County, Maryland.

The Head Conservator will lead the Conservation Program at the
Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory (MAC Lab), Jefferson
Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM), under the supervision of the MAC
Lab Director.  Primary duties include the supervision of
conservators, technicians, and volunteers; examination,
documentation, and treatment of objects and collections; analytical
testing and material identification; preparing cost estimates;
packaging or mounting artifacts for transport, storage or display;
and submitting full reports of all activities, or delegate such
duties to other staff.  The Head Conservator will work with
Archaeological Research, Collections Management, Education, and
Curatorial Programs at the MAC Lab and JPPM, as well as external
clients, to consult, manage, budget, prioritize, supervise and
otherwise ensure the timely completion of conservation projects. The
Head Conservator must be motivated and able to work on complex
projects with minimal supervision, while meeting deadline and
budgetary restraints. The Head Conservator will supervise the
Conservation Technician in charge of the replacement of supplies and
monitoring the maintenance of conservation equipment.  The Head
Conservator is the Safety Officer for the MAC Lab, and is
responsible for organizing safety training, management of hazardous
material, and hazardous waste disposal.

Applicants must have a degree in the conservation of objects from a
recognized conservation degree program, plus three additional
post-graduate years of practical experience in the conservation of
archaeological objects. Equivalent work-experience of three
additional years practical conservation of archaeological materials
may be accepted in lieu of a conservation degree. The applicant must
be able to lift fifty pounds, work on ladders or in crouching
positions, and must have experience with computers operating the
Windows OS and MS Office applications, or other equivalent computer
software. Prior training in health and safety management, hazmat
management, personnel supervision, photographic processing,
X-radiography, or the use of lifting and moving equipment will be
considered a bonus. Applicants must be US citizens or have a
currently valid work visa.
