Subject: Workshop on INCCA Database for Artists' Archives
The International Network for the Conservation of Contemporary Art (INCCA) is holding a database workshop together with the Dutch Foundation for the Conservation of Contemporary Art (Stichting Behoud Moderne Kunst / SBMK) in Amsterdam on Friday June 6, 2008. Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage (Instituut Collectie Nederland / ICN), Amsterdam Friday 6 June, 2008 1-5 pm Participants: maximum 15 The INCCA Database for Artists' Archives is a unique tool created for and by INCCA members, allowing access to each others unpublished information. The database contains metadata records (like library cards) that describe all types and formats of documents. Each record includes keywords and an abstract as well as information on how to obtain the document. It is now possible to attach documents of any digital format to database records making the INCCA database a rich repository of knowledge. Different members may create records concerning the same artist resulting in a virtual artist archive. Close to 200 artists are currently represented in the database including such names as: Marina Abramovic Miroslaw Balka Joseph Beuys Tony Cragg Tracey Emin Gilbert and George Thomas Hirschhorn Donald Judd Ilya Kabakov Bruce Nauman Shirin Neshat Panamarenko The main aim of the workshop is to train INCCA members how to use the INCCA Database for Artists' Archives; how to find and request documents and most importantly how to enter records into the database. The workshop is in the first instance designed for current members who have not yet entered records. But it is also open to potential members who would like to get a better understanding of how the database works before considering becoming a member. INCCA is a network of professionals connected to the conservation of modern and contemporary art and was established to meet the need for an international platform for knowledge and information exchange. Conservators, curators, scientists, registrars, archivists, art historians and researchers are among its members. Since its inception in 1999, the network has grown from 23 to around 150 members (including independents). Membership is through active participation and is based on mutual trust, a commitment to knowledge exchange and a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration.
