Crackle

I am studying art conservation and restoration in EVTEK University
of Applied Sciences. Currently I am working on my final thesis "Elin
Danielson (later Danielson-Gambogi): Portrait of Hilma Westerholm.
Conservation and restoration of the painting." The biggest issue
with this late 19th century oil painting is the large scale drying
craquelure which disturbs the over-all visual appearance of the art
work (see picture in attachments).

I have been looking for case studies with similar craquelure so I
could learn from them. The amount of information available
concerning this particular subject is very scarce so I decided to
ask directly from conservators themselves. I would be very thankful
if conservators who have experience in restoring art works with
drying craquelure would share their knowledge about the subject.

Have you restored paintings with drying craquelure?
If you have, what did you do to them and what materials did you use?
What are the reasons for the decisions you came up with?

Because the very short working time I have with this painting I hope
that you could answer a.s.a.p.
