Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences Margaret Herrick Library The Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences' Margaret Herrick Library is seeking a highly organized, self-motivated, service-oriented individual to oversee the care and conservation of the library's collections. This is a full-time position available September 2008. The Margaret Herrick Library has extensive and comprehensive research collections on the subject of motion pictures including posters, production and costume drawings, books, periodicals, screenplays, advertising ephemera, photographs, manuscript and other special collections relating to prominent industry individuals, studios and organizations. Responsibilities: Propose, implement, and document conservation treatment of works of art on paper, books, manuscripts, posters, drawings and photographs Supervise volunteers and interns Maintain staff awareness of conservation issues facing the library Remedy any inconsistency between staff and/or patron usage by working with collection managers to create library policies Participate in exhibit preparation and installation. Write condition reports, perform conservation treatments, and help to coordinate transportation for materials on loan for exhibitions Oversee museum quality framing and case displays, monitor exhibition environment Work with library department heads to develop and carry out a comprehensive preservation program. Determine necessary storage conditions and make recommendations for the materials within various collections Work with the office manager and department heads to coordinate/educate staff on emergency preparedness planning for library collections Oversee any ongoing long-term preservation projects such as oversized poster storage, re-housing, etc. Network with others in the conservation field for advice and professional development Eligibility and Requirements: Demonstrated ability to develop and carry out conservation treatment of wide range of library materials as gained through graduate degree from recognized conservation training program or equivalent combination of education, training and experience in conservation. Familiarity with preservation issues and collections management in research libraries. Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal and supervisory skills required Knowledge of paper repair treatments such as mending tears and losses with heat set tissue and Japanese tissue and wheat starch paste, aqueous/non-aqueous washes, dry cleaning techniques, mechanical backing removal, flattening and humidification, lining and solvent work for adhesive removal Knowledge of basic photographic repair including mending, cleaning and tape removal. Some understanding of photographic processes and history of photographic materials Knowledge of basic book repair including tip-ins, inserts, sewing/resewing, and case repairs Knowledge of solvent usage in conservation treatments and the safety measures required when storing and using these chemicals Ability to handle basic conservation lab equipment including board shears, ventilation hood and tools needed to perform the above tasks Knowledge of lighting, temperature and environmental conditions appropriate for materials on exhibition Strong computer skills, including experience with the PC platform and databases Ability to handle heavy and awkward-sized materials Framing and matting experience highly desired The position pay starts at $40,000 salary plus benefits. Funds for further education or research may also be available.
