The Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, in partnership with the Northeast Document Conservation Center presents a "Master Studies" Workshop The Conservation of Iron-Gall Ink on Paper Northeast Document Conservation Center Andover, Massachusetts (near Boston) October 3-5, 2008 9 am - 5 pm Instructor: Julie L. Biggs, Senior Conservator, Library of Congress Course Fee: $400 AIC members; $650 non-members This program is supported by the FAIC Endowment for Professional Development; without this support, the registration fee would be $800. Enrollment Limit: 12 Registration Deadline: August 29, 2008 (or until course is filled). Selection of participants will be based on the following criteria: order of receipt of registration; extent of professional experience and training; balance of institutional and private practice conservators; number of registrants from a single organization; preference will be given to current Fellow and Professional Associate members of AIC. Early registration is advised. Course Description: The three-day workshop is designed for conservation professionals who have experience in working with iron-gall ink-inscribed paper artifacts. Participants will learn a comprehensive methodology that combines the most up-to-date research on iron-gall ink and decision-making criteria. Lectures will cover the history, composition, degradation, examination, and treatment of iron-gall ink on paper. Practical sessions will focus on visual examination techniques, pre-treatment testing, the development of treatment proposals, and treatments. Participants will perform washing, complexing, and alkalization treatments and evaluate their results; some time will also be devoted to resizing, repair, and reinforcement. One-day to five-day versions of this workshop have been offered very successfully at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guild of BookWorkers New York Chapter, National Archives and Records Administration, in the U.S., and at the Centro del Bel Libro in Switzerland. Instructor: Julie L. Biggs is currently employed as Senior Paper Conservator at the Library of Congress. She obtained her diploma in Paper Conservation at the Istituto per l'Arte e il Restauro in Florence, Italy, and undertook intern training in the U.K. and in the U.S. Ms. Biggs worked as Senior Paper Conservator at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington D.C. from 1993-2000. She also worked in private practice in the Washington D.C. area from 1993-2005. In 2000, she was awarded a FAIC Samuel H. Kress Conservation Publication Fellowship to prepare a book-length overview of iron-gall-ink-on-paper for practicing conservators. Ms. Biggs has taught several iron-gall ink workshops to conservation professionals. Most recently she led a group effort at the Library of Congress to develop a comprehensive package of examination and treatment guidelines for conservators working with iron-gall ink on paper.
