Paintings Conservator
Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen

Statens Museum for Kunst (The Danish National Gallery), Copenhagen
<URL:http://www.smk.dk> seeks a full-time (37 hour/week) Paintings
Conservator for a permanent position in the Department of
Conservation.

Statens Museum for Kunst is Denmark's principal museum of the visual
arts. The aim of the museum is to impart knowledge and appreciation
of Danish and foreign art, especially Western art from the 14th
century to the present--through collecting, registration,
preservation, research and education. The museum's collections form
the basis for research and general educational activities. The
mission of Statens Museum for Kunst is to encourage people to enjoy
and learn about art.

You will join a motivated team of Conservators for paintings,
drawings and graphic arts, and contemporary art and objects in
Statens Museum for Kunst. The Division of Paintings Conservation is
responsible for the preservation, examination and treatment of
painted images, ranging from early Italian panel paintings to
contemporary art. In addition to the Gallery's own collections, the
conservation department also cares for the art works of the
Hirschsprung and Ordrupgaard collections.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to participate in the
conservation work of Statens Museum for Kunst, engaging with current
scientific research initiatives.

Applicants must have a Master's degree (M.A. or M.S.) from a
recognized graduate conservation training program, specializing in
paintings conservation. Some post-training experience is required;
previous experience in working closely with conservation scientists
is highly desirable. The successful candidate will be expected to
carry out scientific research in support of treatments, the study of
painting techniques, and to perform other tasks related to
conservation activities in the paintings laboratory. The paintings
conservator must be able to develop and implement treatments
independently, as well as to work as part of a team including
collections management and curatorial personnel, engineers and
facilities staff for treatment, transport of objects as well as
mount making for gallery installation.

Excellent interpersonal and writing skills in Danish (for foreigners
communication skills in Danish should be adequate within a year) and
English are required, as is experience with digital photography,
Microsoft Word, Excel and image processing software. Communication,
team working, organisational, and planning skills are important as
well as the ability to promote the interests of conservation and to
train, motivate and develop staff at all levels. All work shall be
performed in accordance with best practice and the Code of Ethics of
ICOM.

Salary commensurate with experience and according to Danish
government contract.

Position is available from 1 October 2008.

Applicants interested in the position as Paintings Conservator
should submit the following material in Danish or English:
transcripts of graduate courses of academic study; a brief
curriculum vitae with biographical information (including language
skills, and publications), current and permanent address, and
telephone numbers; a letter of motivation (maximum 1 page, 1500
characters) in which the applicant explains clearly his/her academic
and personal reasons for applying for the position; a copy of any
previous academic records (courses) and diplomas--if necessary, the
candidate must provide a translation into English (this need not be
an official translation); two sealed letters of recommendation from
conservation professionals familiar with the candidate's work and
including the referee's full address.
