Subject: Travel and training opportunities
Heritage Conservation Network once again offers a series of exciting hands-on opportunities to get involved in building conservation projects around the world. These one- and two-week workshops are a chance to learn new skills, experience new cultures, and, most important, contribute in a meaningful way to heritage conservation efforts. Project locations range from the Old West town of Virginia City, Montana to the World Heritage Site of Lamu, Kenya. The buildings where volunteers will be working are as diverse as the locations, spanning centuries in their ages and a broad range of construction techniques. The following workshops are available: Re-Discovering the Soul of Swahili Tradition: Conservation of a Swahili-Style Stone House Lamu Old Town World Heritage Site, Kenya February 8-21, 2009 Facade Repointing: Conservators Converge With Masons to Mentor Young Adults The Speaker's House, Trappe, Pennsylvania USA May 17-30, 2009 Saving "Shotguns" - Aiming for a Brighter Future Cairo, Illinois USA June 7-20, 2009 City Center Recovery and Conservation Efforts Gyumri, Armenia June 27 - July 9, 2009 Saving the Susan Marr House, Virginia City, Montana USA July 27-31, 2009 For complete project descriptions, see <URL:http://www.heritageconservation.net> HCN's workshops are led by preservation professionals. Volunteer assignments are tailored to the abilities and interests of the participant. If you have never held a hammer, that's fine. And if your background includes the building trades, all the better! Heritage Conservation Network is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of architectural heritage around the world. HCN's workshops support community-based preservation projects and give volunteers the opportunity to give something back by helping to protect valuable cultural treasures.
