Subject: Sir John Gilbert
The Guildhall Art Gallery in London is preparing an exhibition of works by Sir John Gilbert (1817-1897). Gilbert was a prolific Victorian artist who worked both in oils and watercolours, and was also an illustrator. A large number of his later works, painted mainly between the late 1870s and the early 1890s, were donated to the gallery by the artist himself, and there was a later bequest by his brother George Gilbert. However the gallery does not have examples of his earlier paintings and would be grateful for information on this period of his work.
