Conservation Assistant University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology Temporary position 6 months The Conservation Laboratory of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology is seeking a conservation assistant for a six-month, full time position. Working under the direction of the staff conservators, the Conservation Assistant will work collaboratively with the Museum's staff to preserve and care for the Museum's diverse collection of archaeological and ethnographic artifacts. S/he will be responsible for examination, documentation, and basic treatment of a wide variety of objects of both organic and inorganic composition, including metal, wood, glass, stone, ceramic, bone, and other materials. The successful candidate will also participate in museum-wide preservation activities, such as the maintenance, handling, and transporting of artifacts within exhibition and in storage areas. Qualifications: A Master's Degree from a recognized conservation program with a specialization in objects is strongly desired; sufficient practical experience without a completed degree may also be considered .The position requires advanced understanding of conservation issues and professional practices of object care and preservation, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience. The six month term would begin as early as February 1, 2009.
