Subject: AIC certification plan
The recent postings to the Conservation DistList re certification of conservators make good points. There are good reasons to have a certification program but the profession must decide if the benefits outweigh the costs. Conservators should take a look at the proposed certification budget on the AIC website if they not already done so. Also, although the professions are not exactly comparable, conservators might find it interesting to ask archivists who are certified by the Academy of Certified Archivists about the benefits of the archival certification program which began in 1989. ACA members pay an annual fee to maintain their certification with the funds used to pay ACA office expenses and develop new versions of the examinations. Gary D.
