Subject: Library of Congress Topics in Preservation Series (TOPS)
The Preservation Directorate of the Library of Congress is please to make the following three announcements: After more than 5 successful years, and over 35 collaborative programs, the Directorate is expanding its public lecture series. Starting this year, our newly enhanced Topics in Preservation Series (TOPS) will go beyond science to include special sessions devoted to conservation, preventive care, emergency preparedness, digital preservation, etc. The Library can now offer remote participation via limited live webcast opportunities. After years of requests from colleagues to access these presentations, we are now able to offer this new opportunity on a case-by-case basis. If you would like to participate via live webcast, send email to anha<-at->loc<.>gov three days in advance of participating events. The Library will mount slides and audio voice over of select speakers' presentations on the Directorate's homepage following the next series of presentations. The first TOPS presentation for which a webcast will be available is the following: "From Decayed Parchment to 'Bit Rot'--Challenges in Digitizing Archimedes" by Archimedes Palimpsest Program Manager Michael Toth and Data Manager Doug Emery. They will discuss the use of digital multi- and hyperspectral imaging, metadata, and data encoding and access to provide standardized data as effective tools for scientists, researchers, preservation experts and information managers. The presentation will be held January 22, 1:30pm - 2:30pm in the West Dining Room, 6th floor, Madison Bldg., Library of Congress.
