Analytical Scientist National Museums Scotland <URL:http://www.nms.ac.uk> UKP23,375 - UKP27,583 per annum (under review) plus membership of Civil Service pension scheme We are seeking a highly practical scientist with demonstrated research skills to join our Conservation and Analytical Research Department, supporting the full appreciation and accessibility of objects from our collections by undertaking and reporting through science-based examination and analysis. This is a fixed term post, initially for 1 year with the possibility of extension to a maximum of 3 years, covering the career break of the permanent postholder. You will have a degree in the physical or material sciences, plus relevant experience in the analysis of heritage material, or from another discipline where sample size and preservation is critical. Knowledge of conservation issues and additional training and experience in this area would be an advantage. You will apply non-destructive systems (microscopy, X-radiography, XRF and SEM-EDX) to analyse metallic and other inorganic museum and archaeological artefacts, and you are expected to have good understanding and practical expertise in these methods. There may be some opportunity to contribute to the identification of organic materials, particularly from previous conservation treatments, using FTIR. As well as providing an analytical service using the in-house equipment, you will develop links with University and other heritage science partners, particularly through the Joint Laboratory for Conservation Materials Science at Edinburgh University, and contribute to applications for research council funding. You will be motivated to make a real contribution to the work of the department through the application of heritage science, to be aware of professional issues relevant to the post and to deliver best practice. You will be adept at defining and solving problems and presenting and interpreting the results at scientific and non-scientific levels. You will be able to manage your time and work alone or with others, meet deadlines, and have excellent communication and ICT skills.
