UKP23,375 - UKP27,583 per annum (under review) plus membership of
Civil Service pension scheme

We are seeking a highly practical scientist with demonstrated
research skills to join our Conservation and Analytical Research
Department, supporting the full appreciation and accessibility of
objects from our collections by undertaking and reporting through
science-based examination and analysis. This is a fixed term post,
initially for 1 year with the possibility of extension to a maximum
of 3 years, covering the career break of the permanent postholder.

You will have a degree in the physical or material sciences, plus
relevant experience in the analysis of heritage material, or from
another discipline where sample size and preservation is critical.
Knowledge of conservation issues and additional training and
experience in this area would be an advantage.

You will apply non-destructive systems (microscopy, X-radiography,
XRF and SEM-EDX) to analyse metallic and other inorganic museum and
archaeological artefacts, and you are expected to have good
understanding and practical expertise in these methods. There may be
some opportunity to contribute to the identification of organic
materials, particularly from previous conservation treatments, using
FTIR. As well as providing an analytical service using the in-house
equipment, you will develop links with University and other heritage
science partners, particularly through the Joint Laboratory for
Conservation Materials Science at Edinburgh University, and
contribute to applications for research council funding.

You will be motivated to make a real contribution to the work of the
department through the application of heritage science, to be aware
of professional issues relevant to the post and to deliver best
practice. You will be adept at defining and solving problems and
presenting and interpreting the results at scientific and
non-scientific levels. You will be able to manage your time and work
alone or with others, meet deadlines, and have excellent
communication and ICT skills.
