According to research conducted by the Canadian Conservation
Institute (see CCI Analytic Report, ARS 3414), Magic Rub erasers
contain a "plasticizer ... primarily of di-(n-octyl) phthalate". I
can only assume that this plasticizer has reacted with your plastic
storage container.

As part of CCI's research (see CCI Technical Bulletin #11), they
state that the Magic Rub erasers, as well as he Staedtler Mars
erasers are the most effective erasers available. They suggest that
the thorough removal of the eraser crumbs from the paper surface is
important.
