Full programme available at <URL:http://www.bl.uk/whatson/> Photographic History Without Photographs Conference Centre Auditorium The British Library, London, UK Saturday 7 November 2009 11am-12pm Speaker: Michael Pritchard, Photographic Historian Abstract: The first photographic histories published from the 1880s were written by reference to the principal people, discoveries and events to produce all-encompassing surveys of the medium, usually based on histories published in the early manuals and photographic press. There are less well-known sources--some of which are represented in the Library collections--that can give us a broader understanding of photographic history. This lecture looks at some of these: manufacturers' and photographers' trade catalogues, patents, company documents, legal documents, auction catalogues, handbills and printed ephemera and discusses what else they can tell us about photography. The lecture draws on material from the British Library collections, other institutions, as well as private collections. It argues that these hard to find sources have much to tell us about photography's various histories, and can illuminate aspects of the past beyond traditional historical sources, and place photography within a wider economic and social context. Concentrating on the period from 1839 to the 1930s but occasionally venturing up to the 1960s this lecture is heavily illustrated and is intended to be of interest to both a general and specialist audience. Booking: This lecture is free to attend but pre-booking through Angels Arribas <angels.post<-at->3xl<.>cat>, Conservator of Photographs is essential.
