Subject: Position at Tate
Product Developer, Anoxic Framing Tate Millbank, London Closing date: Friday, 18 December 2009 Salary: up to UKP30,500 per annum Contract type: Fixed term contract (1 year) The aim of Tate is to increase public awareness, understanding and appreciation of British art from the 16th century to the present day, and of international modern and contemporary works of art. The Anoxic Project assesses the possibility of framing works of art on paper in oxygen-free conditions--in order to improve their stability in light. Having recently secured another year of funding (with the possibility of another), the next phase is to investigate the commercial potential of any research and technology developed by the project. An important part of this will be developing frame designs suitable for commercialisation. We are looking for an excellent product development engineer, who is ready to exercise a commercial approach and contribute to a ground-breaking heritage science project. Responsible for the successful commercialisation of Anoxic Framing, you'll design product and quality control specifications for a range of anoxic frames. After producing prototype frames, you'll use non-destructive testing methods to monitor their performance, both in-situ and long-term. You'll be working in cooperation, and communicating on a regular basis, with the framer and other external manufacturing partners, as you carry out research which will identify product demand. Reporting any foreseeable problems to the project manager, you'll oversee health and safety aspects and assist in the selection of appropriate works within Tate's collection. Bringing a degree in Mechanical, Chemical or Design Engineering, Design Technology, Industrial Design or similar, you've worked in a laboratory or workshop environment and you've gained a post graduate qualification or significant experience in Product Development. Demonstrating clear communication skills at all levels, you're skilled in technical report writing and apply a hands-on, practical approach when solving problems. You're also organised, results driven and IT proficient, with an awareness of conservation culture in a museum environment.
