Subject: Glenn Gates appointed conservation scientist at Walters Art Museum
The Walters Art Museum <URL:http://www.thewalters.org> is pleased to announce the recent arrival of Dr. Glenn Alan Gates as Conservation Scientist in its Division of Conservation and Technical Research. Glenn has been warmly welcomed by the staff and is already collaborating on projects as diverse as the technical study of a gilded silver Visigothic fibula to the analysis of the treasure binding elements of the historically important Mondsee Gospels. Glenn's position is generously supported with funds from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Previously, Glenn was the Head Research Scientist at the Detroit Institute of Arts where he supervised the integration of organic materials studies with the existing facilities for inorganic artist's materials studies. Glenn also completed the Andrew W. Mellon Post-doctoral Fellowship at the Straus Center for Conservation under the direction of Dr. Narayan Khandekar, and worked in the scientific laboratories at the National Gallery of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Glenn's appointment continues a long tradition at the Walters Art Museum that creates new knowledge about art, its history, technology, and preservation through collaborative study of its comprehensive collections.
