[Note: Whenever a deadline for applications is given by a personnel office, it is generally invoked only when enough applications have been received by that tine to give them a reasonable choice of candidates. The two positions for the Newberry Library are included in this issue, although the application deadline is past, in the hope that readers will still have a chance to apply.]

ASSISTANT CONSERVATOR
Provincial Archives of Manitoba, Department of Cultural Affairs

Qualifications: A recognized course in conservation or equivalent practical experience in the conservation field, and a thorough knowledge of the conservation of works on paper and the chemical properties of the medium and chemicals involved. The successful candidate will be prepared to undergo security clearance.

Duties: Under the direction of the Chief Conservator, the Assistant will apply approved, standard, and customized treatments to all kinds of archival works on paper, including written documents, drawings, naps, plans, charts, and docunentary art. The successful candidate will also assist in providing workshop and training opportunities relating to preservation and conservation matters, and undertake lectures and field visits.

Salary: $18,102 to $25,617 Canadian. Closing Date: November 23, 1981

CONSERVATOR OR PRESERVATION LIBRARIAN
Newberry Library

Qualifications: Graduate degree in conservation, librarianship or related field; or equivalent experience. Training and experience in library conservation or in preservation. Administrative experience and strong managerial skills.

Responsibilities: Direct conservation program for research and rare book library of ca. 1,250,000 volumes, 5,000,000 manuscripts, 60,000 naps. Manage Conservation Department with 11 full-tine staff as well as part-tine staff and volunteers. Serve as advocate for conservation in institutional policy deliberations. The Newberry Library is building a new storage facility for its collections and is planning new conservation facilities. The Conservator or Preservation Librarian will assume leadership in a period of change, guiding the activities of seasoned technicians as well as trainees and interns.

Salary, benefits: Salary dependent on qualifications; benefits include life & health insurance, 4 weeks' vacation, 6 paid holidays, TIAA/CREF after 3 years.

MASTER BINDER
Creative Arts Workshop, New Haven

BINDERY SUPERVISOR
Conservation Department, Bindery Section, Newberry Library

Qualifications: Undergraduate degree or other evidence of understanding the nature of books and their scholarly use; training in bookbinding--either in a shop situation or with a private teacher; 3-5 years experience in a bindery with increasing responsibility for a variety of production techniques or equivalent qualifying experience.

Skills, knowledge, and abilities required: Mastery of methods and techniques of production bookbinding, case-making, and related processes of book conservation; ability to organize work and people for efficient production; ability to motivate people and aptitude for training staff; knowledge of book conservation; skills in record keeping and organization.

Responsibilities: Supervise staff of 7 in production bindery which does all the Library's buckram binding and boxmaking according to standards established by the Conservator. The Newberry Library is a leader in the field of conservation. Recruit, train and evaluate staff. Plan and budget for supplies and equipment; administer their acquisition, storage, and use. Coordinate flow of work between the Bindery and other Library departments.

Hours, salary, benefits: 35-hour week; salary dependent on qualifications and experience; benefits include life & health insurance, 3 weeks vacation, 6 paid holidays.

ILLINOIS COOPERATIVE CONSERVATION PROGRAM LIBRARIAN
Based at Morris Library, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale

Qualifications: MLS and experience in library conservation. Familiarity with ILLINET preferred. Experience in training and workshops desirable.

Duties: To implement an LSCA (Library Services and Construction Act) funded cooperative conservation/preservation program serving all types of libraries in Illinois. Will conduct workshops, answer information requests, and develop training materials dealing with the maintenance, repair and treatment of library materials. Will coordinate cooperative conservation activities throughout the state, including disaster preparedness, fumigation and information preservation. Initial 18-month appointment with possibility of continuation beyond the grant period depending on support from participating libraries.

Salary: $15,000 minimum. Full University benefits.
