John E. Townsend, Jr., has been appointed Principal Bookbinder
in the Custom Binding and Restoration Office, Conservation Division
at the New York Public Library, effective September 7, 1982. Mr.
Townsend recently received a Certificate of Advanced Librarianship
from Columbia University's Conservation and Preservation Program. He
holds a Master of Arts degree in English, with honors, from the
University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a Master of Library
Science degree from the Catholic University in Washington, DC. In
addition, be has had specialized training in both rare books and
archival librarianship.
Mr. Townsend first became interested in bookbinding in 1974 and
began taking lessons in 1976. He has had lessons from Inez
Pennybacker, John McNair and Thorns C. Albro II. For a year in
1978-79 he was assistant to the hand binder in the Carolina
Bookbinding Company.
