• John E. Townsend, Jr., has been appointed Principal Bookbinder in the Custom Binding and Restoration Office, Conservation Division at the New York Public Library, effective September 7, 1982. Mr. Townsend recently received a Certificate of Advanced Librarianship from Columbia University's Conservation and Preservation Program. He holds a Master of Arts degree in English, with honors, from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a Master of Library Science degree from the Catholic University in Washington, DC. In addition, be has had specialized training in both rare books and archival librarianship.

  Mr. Townsend first became interested in bookbinding in 1974 and began taking lessons in 1976. He has had lessons from Inez Pennybacker, John McNair and Thorns C. Albro II. For a year in 1978-79 he was assistant to the hand binder in the Carolina Bookbinding Company.

• Donald R. Sebera, formerly of the Department of Chemistry, Washington College, Chestertown, Maryland, was selected as a senior research scientist in the Research and Testing Office of the Preservation Office in the Library of Congress, effective September 13. His principal responsibility will be to serve as liaison and provide the scientific interface between the research scientists and the conservators.
• Paula Gourley, a member of the Hand Bookbinders of California, is reported in The Gold Leaf (HBC's newsletter) as leaving in September for an extended period in France to study forwarding and finishing.
• Frank Fabry has been appointed Library Conservator at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. He recently studied book conservation at the National Center for Restoration of Books and Documents in Spain (Nuñez de Balboa 82, Madrid 6, Spain). The 1980 Guild of Book Workers directory shows him living in Madrid at that time, and describes him as a binder, maker of decorative paper, and amateur restorer/conservator.
