Plastic Ferrule Brushes

S & S Brushes, at 915 Broadway, New York, NY 10010 (212/260-5959) makes round brushes with non-corroding ferrules for the food industry, at very reasonable prices. A one-inch diameter brush (#700 or 800) costs $2.97. They work fine with PVA.

Planax Fanning Binder

Gane Brothers & Lane (1400 Greenleaf Ave., Elk Grove Village, IL 60007, tel. 312/593-3360) carries an apparatus that allows books in single sheets to be jogged to the spine, clamped and fanned in both directions for glue application. There are attachments for rounding the spine first. Cost: $880. (The more automatic ones with a milling machine attached cost tens of thousands of dollars.) The round spine aligners come separately. The item number is PA 5400 and the model number is DF 46.

Talas Catalog

Wet Pen for Japanese Paper

Japanese paper may be most easily torn into strips for mending if it is first wet along a line with a brush, draftsman's ruling pen, or a felt tipped pen filled with water. The September Conservation News was the source of the felt tipped pen suggestion:

A felt tipped pen may be converted for use with water by removing the ink reservoir and flushing both the reservoir and the pen through with water to wash out the color. Refill with deionized water. Staedtler Mars Graphic 3000 is a suitable pen, Color No. 13 being the palest and easiest to remove.

For Measuring Ions in Wash Water

In labs where calcium or magnesium ions are put into the deionized or distilled water used for washing paper, there is a need for an instrument to measurement the strength of the solution. A reasonably-priced instrument for this purpose is the Electromark Conductivity Analyser #4402, which comes from Markson Science, Inc., Box 767, Del Mar, CA 92014.

Leather

August Velletri, proprietor of Bookmakers in Washington, DC, went to Italy last April for three weeks, prospecting for good leather. He visited tanneries all over Italy--six in southern Italy alone--carrying the Library of Congress specifications with him.

He already carries the Oakridge leathers, which are like the Oasis in quality and color, generally. Color #32 is dark brown. The chemist at Oakridge is Malcolm Lamb, who wrote about native tanning in Nigeria in the New Bookbinder.
