• John J. Romano runs the Hard Pressed Bindery, the logo for which is a tall press loaded with books. Others who have tried to make a living at binding will appreciate the play on words. Address: James Trail, West Kingston, RI 02892.
• Richard Frieder will begin a two-month internship in book conservation at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, in January.
• The University of Michigan Library has appointed Martha Little of New Haven, Connecticut, to head its new conservation unit effective January 3, 1983. She has been a book conservator at the Yale Conservation Studio for six years, and instructor of bookbinding, box making, and Paper marbling at the Creative Arts Workshop for two years. In addition, she has taught (with Gisela Noack) workshops at the Creative Arts Workshop in conservation techniques for librarians. Last spring she taught classes in bookbinding for printers as part of a Yale College Seminar in the Art of the Book. Ms. Little trained with Jane Greenfield at Yale, and with Roger Powell in England. Her first major task at Michigan will be to equip and set up the lab, which is now being built.
• Mary Lampert, an American who attended Camberwell School of Art and Crafts last year, writes that since she finished in July she has worked as a volunteer binder at the College of Arms and Heralds Bindery, where Janet Gunston is the head of the bindery. Under Ms. Gunston's direction she repaired and rebound a 15th century manuscript on vellum. Since the end of September, she says, "I have been very fortunate to work for Roger Powell, at his bindery in Froxfield, Hampshire."
• Joyce Hill Stoner has been appointed the new director of the Winterthur/University of Delaware Art Conservation Program.
• Julie Reilly and Marie O'Shea are interning at the Paper Conservation Laboratory, Smithsonian Institution.
• Chandru J. Shahani, formerly of the National Archives, is the new Research and Testing Officer at the Library of Congress, (No formal announcement has been received yet.)
• Margaret S. Child, whose address, "Deciding What to Save," ran in the August supplement, has been appointed assistant director of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries. She was formerly assistant director for the Division of Research Programs of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
• Bill Schoening is the subject of an APPCG Profile in ConservatioNews for September. This was the first in a series of profiles of members of the Arizona Paper and Photograph Conservation Group. In these profiles the members tell about their facilities and work, to help them become better acquainted with each other.
