Timothy Barrett. Nagashizuki. (This book is not in print again, although it was announced recently in PCN. Henry Morris, whose Bird and Bull Press published it in 1979, says he has not reprinted it and does not expect to. It was sold out soon after it appeared.)

Kennedy Center, Washington, DC 20S66. 61 pp. Interesting reading even for non-specialists; tells why some films, like The Restoration of Books: Florence 1968, have gone all pink, and why some others are lost forever, like Old Man and the Sea, Oklahoma, Les Girls, and Tea and Sympathy. Describes what is being done by whom to preserve films.

Preservation and New Technology Occasional Papers. An intermittent series of papers published by the Library of Congress, edited by William J. Welsh, Deputy Librarian of Congress. No. 1 was January 1983 and was two pages long: "From the Curbstone: Copyright Issues in Video Disk Storage of Library of Congress Collections," by David L. Ladd.

Communique. Newsletter published by the Association for Preservation Technology, P0 Box 216S, Albuquerque, NM 87195. $8/year; six/year. Covers preservation of buildings. Scope overlaps with library preservation in the areas of principles of conservation, fumigation, conservation of original libraries & art works in historic houses, environmental control, promoting preservation awareness, relationship with crafts, and training. Not new: volume 12 is 1983.

"Deacidification of Degraded Linen," by Elizabeth E. Peacock, Studies in Conservation 28: 8-14, 1983. The author reviewed methods of accelerated aging for textiles and chose two methods: 70°C and 50% RH, and 0.01N H₂SO₄ immersion for six hours. She evaluated the effect of magnesium-based aqueous and nonaqueous deacidification on color, tensile strength, stiffness, pH and weight before and after aging, and concludes that they reduce the rate of deterioration of artificially degraded linen during accelerated aging. This may have relevance to binders' and librarians' search for better bookbinding cloth.

IPH Information, 3-4, 1982. (Bulletin of the IPH) This volume contains articles on anti-moth paper (must be the "ten thousand year paper" used in China, containing red lead, reported earlier in AN) and beta-radiography (the preferred way of getting images of watermarks because the writing doesn't show).

"Excerpts on Leather, Vol. 2-6, 1978-82" reprints material that appeared in the Abbey Newsletter during this period. 12 pp. Includes a one-page summary of Betty Haines' 1977 report of the BLMRA 35-year study; "Brief Study of Investigations on the Deterioration of Leather" and "Research on the Dressing & Preservation of Leather" from the April 1981 issue; and numerous shorter items. Available for $1.00 from the Newsletter office. Payment in stamps is acceptable.

Leather Conservation--A Current Survey, edited by James Jackman. The Leather Conservation Centre, Leather Trade House, Kings Park Road, Moulton Park, Northampton NN3 lJD England. 1982. Surveys and discusses the need for a specialist conservation center and describes methods currently used in treatment of wet and dry leather in the UK's conservation labs, This is the second in a monograph series, the first of which was The Fibre Structure of Leather.

"Regional Services: 'Helping Museums Help Themselves'," by J. C. McCawley and P. R. Ward. CCI, The Journal of the National Museums of Canada and Canadian Conservation Institute, 4:14-19, 1980. Describes CCI's Mobile Conservation Laboratory in its first year of operation. The conservators who staff the mobile lab are all women.

"Although the germ of this manual is the proceedings of [IPC's conference, 'Safety in the Paper Conservation Laboratory,' October 4, 1977], the need for comprehensive coverage of the subject has necessitated very considerable extension and expansion." On p. 101-160 is a series of one-page data sheets fur ready reference, giving the description, uses, TLVs, health effects, treatment and precautionary measures on acetone, ammonium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, chloramine T, ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, hydrogen peroxide, methanol, morpholine, naphthalene, naphtha, sodium borohydride, sulphuric acid, tetrahydrofuran, thymol, toluene, methyl chloroform and other compounds. Articles cover hazardous processes, physical hazards, fire protection, storage and disposal, protective clothing and equipment, fume hoods, lighting, skin problems, first aid, legal aspects and safety and health organizations.

The National Preservation Program Office at the Library of Congress now has a list of 34 "audiovisual resources for the preservation and conservation of library and archival materials" that it will lend to organizations and institutions in the United States for up to four weeks. Borrowers must insure the return parcel and are asked to evaluate the item; otherwise, no charge. The list includes the very good Yale slide set on care & handling, items on paper conservation, paper making, environmental control, and a 19-minute slide-tape presentation by the National Preservation Program Office, "Planning a Preservation Program." There is a review in English of the last book in the Binders' Guild Newsletter for March. There is a co-author, Ch. Vermuyse; both are professors at l'Ecole Estienne, a school that trains bookbinders and other craftsmen and artists. "It is really remarkable how much solid, easy-to-follow information has been packed into this text." Many of the illustrations are reproduced in this review, to prove the point.

Statistics, by David Freedman, Robert Pisani and Roger Purves. W.W. Norton. [and] Sampling Techniques, by William Cochran. 3rd ad. John Wiley. These are two good references for librarians planning to do a sample survey of their collection, recommended by an assistant professor of statistics who has had experience designing such surveys. He says that data of a similar sort can be found in the market research field.

"Guidelines for College and University Archives" by the SAA contains many recommendations oriented to conservation, most but not all based on accurate and up-to-date knowledge of conservation. Chicago: SAA, (19827). 12 pp. $2. 00.

Crafts Report for April contains one article on a system for pricing, and another on time management by delegating and consolidating tasks.

Mary Todd Glaser has a recipe for starch paste in the April Framer. She says not to refrigerate it, but to add thymol, dissolved first in methanol.

Sam Ellenport describes the invention and working of his new gilding machine (hand-held) in The New Library Scene for November/December 1982, in the "profile" section.
