The Illustrations

All of the decorative line drawings in the Newsletter are tracings of watermarks--all of them. The ox with his tongue hanging out, on p. 14 in 7/2, is from p. 408 of Hans Kahn's Papier in Basil his 1500; the reindeer's head on p. 20 of the same issue is from Plate XXXV of Alexandre Nicolai's Histoire des Moulins a Papier du Sud-Ouest de la France, 1300-1800: Perigord, Agenais, Angoumois Souls, Bearn, Vol. 1 (Bordeaux: G. Delmas, 1935.

In 7/3, the profile of a deer is from the same plate in Nicolai, and the twin dragons on p. 39 are from Kahn, p. 397. All watermarks are originally twins, by the way, because the vatman used two moulds for each batch of paper, and the moulds had to have matching watermarks. Collectors who are really thorough will get both.

Corrections

• On p. 43, second column: the Preservation Bibliography is all in print, or was at the time it was published, and should be still.
• In the Events section of the last issue, it was stated that Jan Sobota was participating in the four mini-workshops being held to raise funds to bring him to this country; he is not.
• Also in the last issue, in the Literature section, the reference to an article on the permanence of photocopies is wrong somehow. Supposedly it is in Museums Journal, 80 No. 12, 1980; but this journal is said to have only four issues a year. This reference was one of the few not personally examined before publication. The correct reference is not known.

The Abbey Newsletter: Bookbinding and Conservation is issued six times a year and has about 700 subscribers. New subscribers automatically receive all issues published in the current year, unless they request otherwise. All subscriptions expire on the last day of the year.
