PRESERVATION INTERN
Conservation Division, New York Public Library

This position, funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is temporary for 12 months (including four weeks paid vacation). It is available January 2, 1985.

Eligibility requirements: Graduation from an accredited library school. Supplemental training in preservation

administration and/or expertise in executing conservation procedures and techniques, as demonstrated by previous relevant work experience or successful completion of a formal program in the conservation of research library materials. Familiarity with one or more foreign languages desirable. Familiarity with statistical analysis, sampling techniques, and systems analysis desirable. Work experience in a research library or an archives desirable. Applicants should have demonstrated leadership potential, initiative, promise and interest in the area of library administration, and the ability to work independently under general guidelines. Demonstrated communication skills required.

General description: Under the general direction of the Chief of the Conservation Division and working with other administrative staff within the Library, the Intern will undergo a period of general orientation in the administration of the collection management and preservation programs of The Research Libraries. Upon completion of the orientation period, which includes required readings, the Intern will help plan and carry out a specific preservation project or projects. Attends meetings as appropriate; participates in workshops and staff training programs as required. Upon completion of the eleven-month training period the Intern will submit a written report evaluating the training experience.

Salary: $22,630, paid on an hourly basis.

LIBRARY CONSERVATOR
New York Academy of Medicine

The New York Academy of Medicine Library seeks a conservator to assume responsibility for developing and implementing a systematic library preservation program. Duties include administration, planning, staff training and working with the collection. Qualifications: formal training in conservation/preservation techniques; demonstrated administrative, planning and preservation skills; excellent verbal and written communications skills. CONSERVATION EDUCATION PROJECT COORDINATOR
University of California, Berkeley

The University of California and the Cooperative Library Agency for Systems and Services (CLASS) will sponsor a one-year project, beginning in the fall of 1984, to provide education in the conservation of library and archival materials to member libraries of UC and CLASS.

Duties of the Conservation Education Project Coordinator will be to conduct short seminars on basic care, repair, and housing of library and archival materials; to provide technical and emergency conservation information to members; and to prepare a traveling exhibit on conservation, news releases on the Project, and quarterly reports.

A graduate degree in librarianship and conservation training are required. Strong writing and teaching skills will be needed to carry out the duties of the Coordinator. The position will become available 15 August 1984, or as soon thereafter as possible. A full job description will be mailed on request.

Salary will be in the $18,636-$23,844 per annum range, depending on qualifications. This is a temporary, one- year position.
