Archives Expands its Conservation Staff

Four conservators have recently joined the staff of the Document Conservation Branch of the National Archives and Records Service, where last year Norvell Jones became Supervisory Conservator.

Last Fall the Branch hired Catherine Nicholson as senior conservator. She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brown University in art history, a graduate of the Winterthur-University of Delaware Conservation Program, and a former staff member of the National Museum of American History and the National Gallery of Art. In the summer of 1978, she was a NARS conservation fellow and conducted a condition survey of 800 architectural drawings.

Mary Lynn Ritzenthaler, a 1971 graduate of Wayne State University, with an MSLS concentrating in archival administration, has served since 1980 as the SAA's program officer in charge of the society's archival conservation program. Author of the SAA manual, Archives and Manuscripts: Conservation, and co-author and editor of the society's recently published manual on administration of photographic collections, Ms. Ritzenthaler has directed numerous workshops throughout the US on those topics. She has additional experience in the area of binding conservation.

Ms. Jerri Reynolds is a recent graduate of New York University's Conservation Center, with a certificate in conservation and an MA degree in art history. Serving most recently as a conservator of paper artifacts and photographic materials at the Smithsonian Institution, Ms. Reynolds interned at the Center for Conservation and Technical Studies of Harvard' s Fogg Art Museum and at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and served as a Mellon Fellow at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Constance McCabe is a 1982 MFA graduate in museum practice and photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology. From 1980 to 1984, Ms. McCabe participated in RIT's Photographic Technology Department research on the deterioration and preservation of 19th century photographs. She interned at the George Eastman House conservation laboratory.
