SUPERVISOR OF CONSERVATION AND REPOSITORY SERVICES

Duties: Responsible for operation of the Document Restoration Shop and for helping to establish conservation policy for over 14,000 cubic feet of public records; trains and supervises five document restoration technicians and occasional interns in the restoration of the colonial, state, and local government archives of South Carolina dating from 1671; supervises two and a half positions responsible for maintenance of the records in the stacks and two persons providing photocopy and microfilm services; works within broad guidelines to determine appropriate techniques, materials, and procedures for restoration treatment; performs highly skilled restoration tasks; participates in workshops and demonstrations; recommends purchases of supplies and equipment.
Qualifications: In-depth knowledge of conservation problems and solutions; at least three years' professional experience in the conservation of archival materials, with at least one year of supervisory experience; familiarity with disaster preparedness and recovery techniques; ability to interpret conservation literature. Undergraduate degree in appropriate field; master's degree or postgraduate training in conservation, including some work in paper chemistry preferred.
Salary: Grade 33 in the South Carolina state pay system with a salary range of $22,106 to $31,335; eleven holidays; fifteen days annual leave and fifteen days sick leave; fringe benefits package includes Social Security, state retirement, health insurance (with health maintenance organization option), and dental insurance.

CONSERVATION REFERENCE/LIAISON LIBRARIAN

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Conservation Librarian, provides support in two broad categories: the Andrew W. Mellon regional resource project; the University Libraries conservation program. Establishes an information clearinghouse by gathering and organizing a conservation reference collection consisting of books, technical papers, documents, serials publications, films, videos, slides, and product and industry data. Produces resource lists and bibliographies, and acts as information resource to other institutions by mail, telephone and through a quarterly technical digest/newsletter. Acts as liaison between the conservation treatment units of the University and curatorial/library and archives staff. Organizes and maintains collection surveys, and uses automated systems for the priority scheduling of materials for treatment. Cooperates with collection development units and bibliographers in conservation/preservation decision-making, and supervises related searching activities.
Qualifications: Library degree, with at least one foreign language. Minimum of three years experience in archives/rare books management and/or conservation/preservation management. Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.

PAPER CONSERVATOR

BOOK CONSERVATOR

Qualifications: Extensive knowledge of book and manuscript conservation techniques as evidenced by: advanced diploma/ degree in conservation; apprenticeship completion certification; other verifiable certification of advanced training.
Minimum of five years training, plus two years as trained craftsperson. Sound academic background, with good oral and written communication skills, and ability to impart knowledge to others.

RARE BOOKS AND MANUSCRIPTS CONSERVATOR

The Department of Rare Books and Special Collections of Princeton University Library is made up of the Rare Books, Manuscripts, Theatre, Graphic Arts, Western Americana and Historic Maps Divisions as well as several other units. The Department seeks a conservator to work exclusively on its holdings, which consists of a wide variety of materials, including books, manuscripts, posters, prints, newspapers, serials, broadsides, maps and works of art on paper. In coordination with curators and librarians, the conservator is responsible for all matters concerning the conservation and preservation of the collections, including the development of written conservation and preservation policies and procedures; also, the conservator will survey collection needs and (with the cooperation of the Department's professional staff) will establish conservation and preservation priorities.
Duties: Duties include book conservation (conservation binding, rebacking, text-block repair, and construction of boxes for books and pamphlets); manuscript conservation on paper and vellum (washing, deacidification, mending, and flattening of documents); conservation of works of art on paper (consolidation of pigments, tape removal, stain removal, backing removal and mending); planning and implementing as necessary (in conjunction with the Department's professional staff) the microform preservation of special collections materials; exhibition matting, framing, and installation; supervision of student assistants; coordination of activities with Library professional staff; maintaining detailed records of all work in progress; participating in establishing general conservation policies for the University Library system. Reports to the Associate University Librarian for Rare Books and Special Collections.
Qualifications: Advanced degree or equivalent experience in rare book and manuscript conservation. Extensive knowledge of library conservation in general and special collections materials in particular. Ability to deal effectively with library staff, faculty, donors, readers, and student assistants, with ability to also generate and implement conservation and preservation policies and procedures.

PAPER CONSERVATOR
Rare Books and Manuscripts Dept., Boston Public Library
Under the direction of the Keeper of Rare Books and Manuscripts, assumes responsibility for the program of paper conservation and conservation of other materials like maps, photographs, prints, etc., according to the modern techniques of restoration. The Conservation Laboratory has two units, a book conservation laboratory and a paper conservation laboratory, each headed by a Conservator. Each laboratory has an apprentice assistant. The Rare Books and Manuscripts Department has a collection of 250,000 rare books, over 1,000,000 manuscript items, extensive collections of photographs, prints, and maps and several million items in its archival collections.
Job Description: Duties include making recommendations for appropriate preservation of nonbook materials, analyzing the composition of materials, examining paper for insect damage, foxing or mold growth and determining appropriate treatment. Carrying out restoration needed, keeping necessary records, data and statistics, and organizing and conducting short seminars for staff and other members of the library community.
Qualifications: Graduation from a well-recognized program in book and paper conservation, with five years of experience either in a research library or in an archival depository, with specialization in manuscripts and documents, required. Good knowledge of chemistry. Demonstrated ability to plan and supervise work flow. Ability to disseminate the results of his/her work of restoration.
Salary Range: $28,700 to $38,750. Vacation of four weeks. Major medical, three weeks sick leave, 13½ days paid holidays, three personal leave days. Excellent pension.

ADVANCED PAPER CONSERVATION INTERN
Pierpont Morgan Library
The Pierpont Morgan Library is offering a nine-month, nonrenewable internship to an advanced paper conservation student who would work half the week in the conservation bindery, under Miss Deborah Evetts, Book Conservator, and half the week in the paper conservation laboratory, under Mrs. Patricia Reyes, the Mellon conservator. The period of the internship is 1 September 1987 to 31 May 1988.
Qualifications: Graduation from a recognized conservation training program or equivalent training and professional experience. United States citizenship required.
Salary: $12,000 for the nine-month period, pins benefits.

LIBRARY TECHNICIAN

Duties: Performs a variety of conservation and repair treatments for library materials. Performs basic and routine repair and refurbishing of books and covers of books; performs basic and routine paper mending with Japanese paper and starch paste; fabricates custom protective enclosures such as phase boxes, four-flap portfolios with wrappers, and pamphlet binders; participates in the selection of material for treatment; selects appropriate treatment options for materials in accordance with preservation policies established by the Librarian; inventories, orders and prepares for use materials and supplies used in all treatments.
Principle Responsibilities Include: Constant supervision of the collection to determine which books need repair and conservation; selection of materials for repair and conservation work to be done both in house and by an outside conservator; cleaning the books and treating leather bindings on an ongoing basis; minor repairs for materials which are not sent to outside conservators; interaction with outside conservator for determining type, extent and cost of repairs and conservation activities; and performance of other duties as assigned by the Librarian.
Requirements: High school education, plus coursework and/or training in library conservation and preservation methods; excellent manual dexterity and knowledge of paper and book structure and elementary paper chemistry; expressed interest in libraries and librarianship as part of a private membership organization.
Salary: $17,000 - $19,000.

DOCUMENT RESTORATION TECHNICIAN

Duties: Surveys conditions of archival materials and recommends preservation treatments; performs basic preservation treatments such as placing items in archival storage enclosures, surface cleaning, mending, and encapsulation; prepares documents for exhibit including matting and framing when appropriate; and maintains lab equipment and orders supplies.
Minimum qualifications: Two years experience in the care, preservation, handling and/or conservation of historical documents and related materials; manual dexterity and good attention to detail; and familiarity with current paper preservation principles and techniques.

HEAD, CONSERVATION DEPARTMENT
(New Permanent Position) Emory libraries
Responsibilities: Organizes and supervises an inhouse conservation facility for Emory libraries under the direction of the Preservation Officer. Plans and develops the repair facility, manages the conservation components of the Title II C grant project, prepares budget requests for personnel, supplies, and equipment, and implements the training program in collections maintenance for Emory libraries staffs.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelors degree and three years experience with increasing responsibility, which include: two years experience in a comprehensive repair facility dealing with research collections; or two years of internship or apprenticeship in a formal conservation/repair facility; and one year of managerial/supervisory experience; or other equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Ability to communicate effectively; ability to coordinate work with others, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all Emory libraries; superior manual dexterity and demonstrated ability to perform delicate, exacting tasks. Preferred: Strong organizational skills, including experience in establishing a conservation/repair facility; experience in conducting workshops; and knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of paper, cloth, leather, adhesives, and other component materials of books.
