Events In The News

In Berlin, the Federation Internationale des Archives du Film (FIAF) held their 43rd general meeting May 17-19, then went right into a joint technical symposium with the Federation Internationale des Archives de Television (FIAT) and the International Association of Sound Archives (IASA) May 20-22, much of which concerned preservation. There were 30 papers and a panel, and the topics covered included ethics, buildings, FICA box, biodeterioration, testing of materials, environment, deterioration, user copies, machines for playback and for treatment, standards, and examination and restoration methods. FIAF' s secretariat is at Coudenberg 70, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium. (Thanks to Susan Dalton, archivist at the National Center, API, for this information.)

There will be 14 different events (tours, open houses, talks, meetings and workshops) concerning preservation at the Society of American Archivists meeting in New York Aug. 31 to Sept. 6. Among them will be sessions on preservation surveys, education for preservation personnel, risk management, natural disasters, and preservation data elements. Registration is $90 before August 3, for nonmembers. For a registration form, write SAA, 600 5. Federal St., Suite 504, Chicago, IL 60605 (312/922-0140). By contrast, only three of the 101 sessions in the American Association of Museums' meeting in San Francisco this year pertained to preservation or conservation.

Silvia Rennie has sent in her fall itinerary: Sept. 25, slide show and Sept. 26-27, workshop in Denver on marbling, then half-vellum with boards covered with the marbling (organizer, Karen Jones, 3191 Clyde P1., Denver, CO 80211); Oct. 1, workshop in Dallas on design and onlay-work in leather at the Craft Guild (organizer, Mrs. Karayanis, 3327 Prescott Ave., Dallas, TX 75219); Oct. 4-5, workshop in Austin on paper decorating--marbling with oil colors, paste papers, ink, etc., and possibly a limp binding with one of the papers (organizer Thomas W. Taylor, 1906 Miriam, Austin, TX 78722). The workshops may include slide shows on technique.

Hugo Peller has sent his itinerary for a series of workshops in October and November to Deborah Wender (13 Central, Salem MA 01970, 617/744-7844), to whom inquiries should be sent. She writes that from October 17 to 31, he will be teaching a group of women, "my Dallas ladies," in one of their binderies near Dallas. He will stay in Dallas two more days for the opening of the exhibition of the bindings they make. Then November 7-8, he will be in Boston for a workshop, "Pop-up Boxes with Hugo Peller," sponsored by the New England chapter of GBW ($80). Hugo calls these boxes "Trick #99." November 14-15, he will be in New Haven for a workshop, tentatively titled "Gold Tooling and Leather Decoration Techniques," same sponsor ($90). (The Boston workshop will be at the North Bennet Street School, where he will incidentally teach the students for a day about edge gilding techniques.)

The first nation-wide "Local Television News Archives Conference" will be held October 21-23 at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in Madison, organized by the National Center for Film and Video Preservation (Kennedy Center, Washington, DC 20566, 202/828-4000) with funding from NHPRC. It will cover acquisition, processing, preservation, access, legal matters and development. $25. Dead line: August 1.
