LIBRARY CONSERVATOR
New-York Historical Society
Applications are invited for the newly created position of Library Conservator of the New-York Historical Society, a full member of Research Libraries Group and of the Independent Research Libraries Association.
Responsibilities: 1) Planning and implementing a program for preservation and conservation for the extensive collections of this 185-year-old library in close cooperation with library staff and museum conservation staff. 2) Supervising a small staff of binders and eventually to develop an apprenticeship program for bookbinding. 3) Hands-on conservation work including preparation of books and related material for exhibition and use. 4) Work with librarian in design and construction of new fully funded laboratory facility in building.
Requirements: Six years' experience in rare book restoration preferred. Ideal candidate would be a trained book conservator with experience in the administration of a large research library's collections.
Salary: Minimum $25,000; salary commensurate with experience with experience and education. Excellent benefits include paid holidays and vacation, pension, life insurance, medical and dental plans.

LIBRARY TECHNICIAN

Duties: Performs a variety of conservation and repair treatments for library materials. Performs basic and routine repair and refurbishing of books and covers of books; performs basic and routine paper mending; fabricates custom protective enclosures such as phase boxes, four-flap portfolios with wrappers, and pamphlet binders; participates in the selection of material for treatment; selects appropriate treatment options for materials in accordance with preservation policies and priorities established by the Librarian; inventories, orders and prepares for use materials and supplies used in all treatments.
Principal responsibilities include: Constant supervision of the collection to determine which books need repair and conservation; selection of materials for repair and conservation work to be done both inhouse and by an outside conservator; cleaning the books and treating leather bindings on an ongoing basis; minor repairs for materials which are not sent to outside conservator; and performance of other duties as assigned by the Librarian.
Requirements: High school education, plus coursework and/or training in library conservation and preservation methods; excellent manual dexterity and knowledge of paper and book structure; expressed interest in libraries and librarianship as part of a private membership organization.
Salary: $18,000 - $19,000

PAPER CONSERVATOR
Australian National Gallery
Applications are invited for the post of Conservator 2 (Paper) at the Australian National Gallery, whose collections include the pre-eminent National Collections of Australian Prints and Drawings, a comprehensive holding of International Prints including the Felix Mann Collection of Lithography and the Illustrated and Rare Book Collections. In addition, the Gallery holds the National Photographics Collections of both Australian and International photographs, and a representative collection of International Drawings from c. 1800, and has a regular acquisition policy for all of these collections.
Duties: Responsible to the Conservator 3 (Paper), the duties of the successful applicant include the examination, conservation and documentation of works on paper comprising prints, drawings, books and photographs. The appointee will be expected to provide expert advice on all matters relating to the presentation, handling and exhibition of the Gallery's collections and assist in directing the work of junior conservators and students as required.
Qualifications: Applicants must possess relevant professional qualifications or have relevant and extensive working experience in paper conservation.
The successful candidate can be offered permanent appointment to the above position or, if they wish, a three to five year fixed-term engagement.

PRESERVATION LIBRARIAN

Duties: Works closely with the Head Librarian, Preservation Department, and may serve as acting department head. Special responsibilities in the area of microfilming and aids in carrying out Division routines and outreach programs for all units within the library system. Manages the Microfilming Unit. Has wide responsibilities in the development,
implementation, and oversight of special projects. Assists in the supervision and daily problem-solving required within the Preservation Division. Aids in the review of deteriorated materials with bibliographers and curators. Writes reports and interacts with the Conservation and Preparations Divisions and with other departments. Aids in carrying out preservation education activities. Participates in the Library's planning activities and is expected to be active professionally.
Qualifications: M.L.S. from an MA-accredited library school, with emphasis on preservation administration preferred. In-depth knowledge of microformats and preservation microfilming. Demonstrated ability to plan projects, write reports, and communicate effectively. Knowledge of running a microfilm lab desirable. Supervisory experience preferred. Two or more years of professional experience in a preservation program, or the equivalent training with some field experience, preferred.
Salary and rank dependent upon qualifications and experience; $23,500 minimum. Appointment at the rank of Librarian I or Librarian II. Benefits include 22 days vacation; 16 holiday, recess, and personal days; TIAA/CREF or Yale retirement; comprehensive health care, and relocation assistance.

PRESERVATION/INFORMATION COORDINATOR

We are seeking a highly qualified individual to fill our Preservation/Information coordinator's position. The successful applicant will have an extensive background in both education and training. The applicant must be able to plan and have the ability to apply that planning to establish a successful document preservation program. Broad knowledge of the problems encountered and the training and ability to solve those problems in a long-term preservation repair and storage program for documents and other related records is a must. The successful applicant must also be able to work with state and local government officials to implement or enhance local preservation programs and techniques.
The base salary is $21,918 annually with generous employee benefits. The salary may be negotiable if the candidate is extremely well qualified. The Conservation Lab is located in our State Library building in downtown Indianapolis, a rapidly changing area of our city.
