I refer to your Abbey Newsletter dated February 1989, V. 13 #1 page 12, under the heading of Library Binding Discussion Group.

I issued an internal memo on October, 1988, stating: When a textblock is to be machine or hand sewn through the fold and it has been determined an outer edge is unsuitable for trimming, all edges will become "Do Not Trim" for that volume.

Your statement would imply we have a blanket "No Trim Policy." Our policy, other than for the above-mentioned items, is to trim, as slightly as possible, all outer edges where margins allow or to follow customer instructions when applicable.

The "outcry" you refer to was from less than one percent of our customers and these customers were given an instruction to meet their needs.

Lastly, the standard does not only forbid trimming for volumes to be recased and that are already rounded and backed; it forbids trimming of any edge where text, motes, illustrations, folds, maps, or inserts might be lost or damaged.
