Preservation Outreach Representative
Minnesota Historical Society

A two-year position has been established to initiate preservation outreach services state-wide to museums, libraries and archives. The incumbent will work with the Head of the Conservation Department of the Minnesota Historical Society to organize and provide preservation and collection management information and training through workshops, consultation and information referral. The position will involve travel throughout the state.

Minimum qualifications include a BA, training and experience in conservation, preservation or collections management of library, archive and/or museum collections. The successful candidate should be able to relate well to staff and members of small and median sized organizations and have a demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Salary is $2100 per month minimum with excellent fringe benefits.

BOOK CONSERVATION LABORATORY DIRECTOR
Bridwell Library, Southern Methodist University

The Bridwell has an immediate opening for a full-time Director of its book conservation lab.

Responsibilities include preservation of the Bridwell collection through technical processes related to paper and binding restoration and through original fine binding. The applicant must be artisan and technician; direct a state-of-the-art laboratory; have experience in supervising employees and volunteers; and monitor housekeeping, security and environmental standards in the general and special stacks and during exhibitions.

Minimum qualifications: Bachelor-equivalent education, important internships/apprenticeships, ten years of conservation experience at an advanced level, a portfolio of fine bindings executed.

Salary: $26,823 - $44,290

LIBRARY SUPERVISOR (BINDERY)
Brown University Library

Responsible for the daily operations of the Bindery Unit, including the efficient functioning of both commercial and in-house binding procedures and the management of records and statistics.

Requirements: College or university degree, or equivalent experience required; skills in bookbinding and book repair as demonstrated through formal training and a portfolio of work; ability to teach and direct others in bookbinding and book repair techniques; ability to organize work and supervise staff; ability to organize and maintain accurate records; ability to interact favorably with staff, faculty and commercial binders; knowledge of sound conservation practices; familiarity with regional and national preservation activities. Previous related experience desired; reading or bibliographic knowledge of a foreign language preferred.

Hiring range: $20,000-$23,200 based upon experience.

ASSISTANT UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN FOR PRESERVATION
Harvard University Library

The position is that of Malloy-Rabinowitz Preservation Librarian in the Harvard University Library. As a senior officer (equivalent to an Assistant University Librarian) reporting to the Director of the Harvard University Library, provides University-wide leadership in the development and expansion of preservation activities and coordinates extensive University-wide preservation efforts. The Preservation Librarian represents the Harvard University Library at relevant conferences and meetings, and is expected to participate actively in the preservation field with preservation agencies, organizations, national programs, and other research libraries.

May supervise the development and management of a processing center. Works closely with the Assistant Director for External Affairs to prepare proposals to federal and private agencies to develop resources in support of preservation programs.

The Harvard University Library, founded in 1638, is the oldest library in the United States and the largest university library in the world. This decentralized system of nearly one hundred individual library units is coordinated through the Office of the Director. The major libraries include those under eight faculties, with the Harvard College Library in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences being the largest. The University Library holdings exceed 11 million volumes, and the total annual budget is over $40 million.

Qualifications: Significant professional library experience in preservation, including an intimate knowledge of technological and administrative solutions to preservation problems, familiarity with conservation issues, physical treatment of library materials, and current directions in the preservation and conservation fields; demonstrated organizational ability with strong interpersonal skills; capacity to work within a complex organizational structure to direct large-scale preservation projects involving many independent library units. Experience with grant proposals and knowledge of collection development issues highly desirable.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications (range from $45,000 -).

PRESERVATION INTERN
New York Public Library

The New York Public Library has available a 12-month temporary position (beginning September, 1989) for a Preservation Intern. Under the general direction of the Assistant Director for Conservation, the Intern will have a period of general orientation in the administration of collection management and preservation programs of The Research Libraries. The Intern will then help plan and carry out a specific preservation project (or projects), attend meetings, and participate in workshops and staff training programs. Upon completion of the 11-month training period, the Intern will submit a written evaluation of the training experience.

Qualifications: MLS from an accredited library school, supplemental training in preservation administration and/or expertise in the execution of conservation procedures/techniques as demonstrated by previous relevant work in the conservation of research library materials. Two years of professional experience, including supervisory experience, preferred. Familiarity with foreign languages, statistical analysis, sampling techniques/systems analysis, and experience in a research library or archives desirable. Must possess initiative, interest in library administration, ability to work independently under general guidelines, and excellent communication skills.

Salary: $27,300.

SENIOR PAPER CONSERVATOR
New York Public Library

This position is part time (28 hours per weak) and classified as Specialist III.

The Performing Arts Research Center/Dance Collection of The Research Libraries seeks a Senior Paper Conservator to oversee the examination, specification, conservation treatment and documentation of works on paper and other non-book library materials. The incumbent will work with senior staff in the Dance Collection and the Conservation Division to develop treatment strategies for Dance Collection materials, ranging from single items of extremely high value to large collections of moderate value. Will assist in determining appropriate methods and materials to be used in standard conservation procedures and will specify and perform a wide variety of treatment operations.

Qualifications: Master's degree from an accredited conservation training program and substantial professional experience in archival art-on-paper, book, manuscript, and photographic conservation. Thorough knowledge of conservation theory and techniques and demonstrated treatment skills. Detailed knowledge of paper and other appropriate conservation chemistry. Good oral and written communication skills and ability to impart knowledge to others. Knowledge of the preservation problems of a large research library desirable. Position offers a good starting salary and excellent benefits.
