Corrections

Apparently the article "The Advantages of Low Relative Humidity" in the February issue (p. 15) gave the impression that research results are conflicting. This is not the case: research results uniformly support recommendations of low RH. But most recommendations that you hear from experts are high, and they do not agree with each other, because by and large they are based an tradition, rather than research. Each expert relates to a different tradition. There seems to be no pressure from any quarter to reach agreement on this matter, or to justify recommendations on the basis of research by scientists or curators, except within the NISO committee working on environmental conditions.

The reference in the last line of p. 50 in the last issue should be to the May 1989 issue of this Newsletter, where the continuous process leafcaster of Museum Services is described.

On p. 52 or the June issue, there is an announcement of publication of Proceedings of the International Symposium: Conservation in Archives (Ottawa, May 10-12, 1988). The ordering information was not clear at the time. It should have said clearly that the money should be sent, in German Marks, to the French address given for the International Council on Archives. K.G. Saur doesn't know anything about it.

Amparo Torres's address was given wrong in the last issue: it should be 212 New Mark Esplanade, Rockville, MD 20850.

Most of the Abbey Newsletter's expenses, and those of its companion publication, the Alkaline Paper Advocate, are not paid by an outside organization, but by its 1200-odd subscribers, sales of back issues and the pH pen, and by voluntary donations. The Abbey Newsletter: Bookbinding and Conservation is issued eight times a year and has about 1200 subscribers. New subscribers automatically receive all issues published in the current year, unless they request otherwise. All subscriptions expire on the last day of the year. Checks may be made out in dollars or pounds, payable to Abbey Publications; send to 320 E. Center St., Provo, UT 84606 (801/3731598).

Paid advertisements, except for job ads, are not accepted. Job announcements are billed at a rate of $50 for the heading and the first ten lines (62 characters per line), plus $2 per line thereafter. Any notice that is appropriate and newsworthy will be printed if there is room for it. Written contributions and bits of news are welcome. Claims for issues never received will be honored within a year of publication. Defective issues will be gladly replaced on request. A complete list of back issues is available.

The Abbey Newsletter is selectively indexed in Art & Archaeology Technical Abstracts, the Institute of Paper Science & Technology Abstract Bulletin, and Graphic Arts Literature Abstracts. All issues but v-1 #2 are in print, and each volume has its own index. Interim indexes are available on request.

The Editor encourages readers to photocopy freely from the Newsletter; but the editor's permission must be obtained before making more than 20 copies of any part.
