Events in the News

• The library binding program, "New Directions in Library Binding: Life After 'Class A"' that was to have been held in Pittsburgh Sept. 14-15 was cancelled because not enough people signed up.
• A one-day round table discussion on "The Artist's Sketchbook: Art or Artifact?" will be held September 22, 1990, at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. Discussion leaders will include Konstanze Backmann, Margaret Holben Ellis, Deborah Evetts, Daria Keynan and Marjorie Shelley. Call the Conservation Center, 212/772-5849 (Fax: 212/772-5807).
• PALMCOP, South Carolina's statewide Preservation Organization, is planning to hold its annual meeting in conjunction with two workshops at Francis Marion College in Florence, SC, on November 8-9, 1990. A morning session will cover the unexpected staffing and equipment problems that occurred after Hurricane Hugo. Of three concurrent sessions in the afternoon, one will deal with insurance matters (FEM, risk management, and coverage for public agencies with archival holdings). The other two are workshops: hands-on practice in disaster recovery techniques, and drawing up a disaster plan. Fee for nonmembers: $20, plus $10 for each workshop. • A circulating exhibition of work of members of Meister der Einbandkunst is being organized by the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild. It has been scheduled so far for four Canadian locations, April 10 to August 2, 1991, and for the Bridwell Library in Dallas from October 2 to December 19, 1991. • "Media Save: Cinema and Television for the Protection of Our Cultural Heritage!' is called an "international festival of the press," and looks like it will be a Cross between a large-scale press conference and a conservation conference. Journalists and film-makers, conservators, art historians and friends of cultural institutions are invited to Rome in May of 1991 by ICCROM to discuss ways of increasing public support for efforts to safeguard the cultural heritage: artifacts from museum, libraries and archives, as well as buildings, monuments and archeological sites. • Conservation of Paper and Related Material" is an international course that will be held in August and September 1991 (8-9 weeks). It is addressed to a maximum of 15 participants: paper conservators from cultural institutions, curators, archivists or librarians working in the field of conservation. Scope: climatology, basic chemistry, conservation methods, adhesives, papyrus, leather and parchment, and a 2-week seminar in Japanese conservation methods. $400 fee; working language English. • The Institute of Paper Conservation has the following events on its calendar for 1990-91: Nov. 9, David Helliwell lecture on Chinese binding structures and their conservation; March 8, Julius Grant (the noted forensic scientist); Spring 1991, Nicholas Hadgraft, bibliography workshop; April 26 at Oxford, a one-day meeting on "Keeping up with Large Collections," fee �25, preprints available to non-delegates.
