San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is offering a one-year internship for a qualified student from a graduate training program, or an individual of equivalent experience, from September 1991 through August 1992. The intern will aid the Paper Conservator with hands-on treatment of works from the SFMOMA collection, as well as objects from other collections of a wider chronological scope. Exhibition, installation, and storage concerns will also be a focus of the internship. Applicants should have a particular interest in twentieth-century art.

PRESERVATION REVIEW LIBRARIAN
Harvard College Library
Responsibilities: Responsible for day-to-day management of the Preservation Review Section of the Preservation Department. The Section is responsible for initiating and carrying out all bibliographic, technical and clerical aspects of the process of preservation decision-making and disposition.
Reports to the Malloy-Rabinowitz Preservation Librarian. Following a final reorganization of the Preservation Department (a new department in the College Library) the position will report to the Head of the Preservation Review and Reformatting Division. Supervises 3.5 FTE and 1.5 FTE casuals assigned to bibliographic control and materials handling tasks, including gathering information on the work/s under consideration; organizing materials for decision-making by subject and language specialists; performing data input -and copy cataloging for titles selected; and following through on preservation decisions to the point of final disposition. Also supervises 2 FTE preservation microfilming project staff. Works closely with the heads of the Binding, Conservation, and Photographic Services sections.
Qualifications: Required: MLS. At least 3 years experience in technical services in a large research library. Experience with searching online data bases. Supervisory experience, including hiring and training staff. Highly desirable: Knowledge of preservation techniques including methods of assessing physical condition, options for treatment; and the technical aspects of microfilming. Familiarity with HOLLIS or other NOTIS-based system. Experience with searching and interpreting data in old card catalogs based on earlier cataloging rules and procedures.

HEAD OF THE CONSERVATION DEPARTMENT
The Huntington Library
The Huntington Library invites applications for the position of Head of the Conservation Department. The Huntington is a major international research and cultural center located nine miles northeast of Los Angeles civic center. It serves 2000 scholars and half a million visitors each year; its collections include 5200 incunabula, 2-2 million scripts and extensive prints and photographs.
The responsibilities are to oversee preservation and conservation activities, monitor conformance to existing policies, and develop new policies related to the preservation aspects of disaster preparedness, equipment and supplies. The Head of Conservation Department must keep current on new developments in the field, and serve as principal book conservator. Duties also include planning and coordinating a departmental conservation program, monitoring care and treatment of collections, and educating department, staff and readers related to conservation. This position provides leadership in conservation/preservation throughout the library. The Head of the Conservation Department is also responsible for managing grant and exhibition budgets related to conservation, and supervises a staff of five, as well as a volunteer program.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have an MLS from an accredited library school with specialization in conservation or equivalent training and experience. The Head of the Conservation Department must be well organized, able to work well with others and have some supervisory/administrative experience.

CONSERVATION LAB TECHNICIAN

Responsibilities: Works under the supervision of the Senior Book Conservator. Assists in the development of tracking procedures and statistics for work done in the Book Conservation lab. Works closely with Stack Manager. Assists in the training and supervision of interns and volunteers regarding basic repairs and treatment including phased boxing operations, encapsulations, and rehousing. Assists the Conservator in full conservation treatments. Performs basic repairs and treatments of bound materials. Monitors, orders and receives supplies from outside vendors.
Qualifications: BA or BS preferred. Minimum of one year apprenticeship or advanced bookbinding lessons and an understanding of conservation principles. Minimum of one year experience in a library/archives conservation lab or private shop. Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with staff at all levels, to coordinate work with others, to establish and maintain effective working relationships, and to work independently. Maintains lab equipment. Familiarity with personal computers desirable.

CONSERVATION SUPERVISOR

Seeking supervisor for inhouse conservation treatment facility. Develops survey and treatment procedures; trains, supervises, schedules work of subordinates; prepares budget requests; orders and maintains supplies and equipment; monitors environmental conditions; prepares reports; assists administrative staff develop policies and procedures concerning preservation of historical records.
Qualifications: MA in Library Science, Preservation Administration or related field; and two years full-time experience in archival or library materials preservation, one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity. New York City residency required within 90 days of appointment.

BOOK/PAPER INTERN
Northeast Document Conservation Center
The Northeast Document Conservation Center, now occupying a new state-of-the-art facility in Andover, is again offering an advanced internship in paper or book conservation. The position will be supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. To begin in August or September 1991, it will run for two years and will include liberal travel benefits. Qualifications: Applicants should have completed a graduate conservation program or have equivalent educational and work experience with a specialty in either art on paper or book conservation. Candidates should enjoy working productively on a variety of historic and artistically important materials. Since 1980 NEDCC advanced internships have provided excellent learning opportunities rich in hands-on experience.

Successful candidates will perform a variety of phased treatment and collections maintenance procedures including but not limited to collection maintenance repairs, encapsulation and post binding, recasing, nonaqueous deacidification, and the production of phased boxes and other protective enclosures. Will prepare treatment records and assist in processing materials. Will perform lab maintenance and related duties as required.
Qualifications: Qualified applicants will have a Bachelor's degree, knowledge of current book and paper conservation techniques, and one to three years experience in conservation, or equivalent training and experience. Familiarity with the physical characteristics of library materials and knowledge and skill in using standard conservation equipment, tools, and materials required. Experience in research library or similar institution highly desirable. Position temporary, term ending two years from date of hire.
