We need a symbol to identify alkaline paper. Some people are borrowing NISO's registered mark, the infinity sign in a circle, for this purpose, but they are sending the wrong signal. That sign means that the paper on which it is printed conforms to the ANSI/NISO standard for paper permanence, which has five specifications, not just one.
Paper Manufacturers want to identify their products as alkaline, and librarian want to identify the books in their collections that were printed on alkaline paper, to avoid sending them for deacidification. A simple, compact sign that could go on a package or a cover, preferably a sign with an easy-to-perceive meaning, would be ideal. If any signs have already been devised and put to use, readers would be glad to learn about them. -The Editor
