Preservation Administration Intern

This is a temporary 12-month position funded by a grant from the Mellon Foundation to support research-library preservation programs nationally. The intern will report to the Assistant Director for Preservation, and will spend time learning the operations of each Preservation Division unit including the Conservation Laboratory, the Preservation Reformatting Department, and Materials Processing.
Responsibilities will include surveying the condition of a branch library collection, assessing current preservation procedures and needs, assisting in preparation of a grant proposal, and other appropriate special projects. The intern will have the opportunity to participate in planning sessions, policy discussions, and other library-wide preservation activities.
In addition to an accredited MLS, requirements are: knowledge of preservation and conservation practices and techniques, as demonstrated through previous relevant experience and/or successful completion of a formal program in the preservation of research library materials.
We are particularly interested in minority applicants for this position.

Library Preservation Officer

Responsibilities: Plan and direct a comprehensive preservation program for all Emory libraries including staff and user education, collection review, replacement and reformatting, conservation treatment, environmental control, and disaster planning. Write and administer grants. Develop and manage budgets. Write and monitor contracts for library binding and other services. Coordination with regional and national activities is expected.
Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS with advanced training in preservation administration and 2-5 years relevant experience, or other equivalent combinations of education and experience; knowledge of preservation and collection management practices and issues, evidence of initiative and promotional ability; demonstrated managerial and organizational ability with strong interpersonal skills; excellent oral and written communication skills.
Beginning Salary Depending on qualifications and experience, $26,000-$35,000 (Librarian II); $31,000-$50,000 (Librarian III)

Library Preservation Intern
Brooklyn Museum Art Reference Library
Requirements: Ability to plan and implement an extensive preservation project to stabilize, organize and rehouse a large collection of fragile and unique costume and fashion sketches. Applicants must have experience with handling library or art collections especially works on paper. Experience in a library preservation program is desirable.
Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Paper Conservator, Library Preservation Associate and Assistant, the Intern will organize and place the approximate 20,000 sketches into new archival enclosures; remove staples, pins and tape and dismount sketches from acidic boards. Rearranging and labeling of the collection onto new shelving will be a priority. Intern will assist with the inventory of the entire sketch collection.
Term of Internship: Eight months, 7 hours per day, 2 days per week. The exact length of internship and schedule are flexible and can be adjusted according to intern's needs within the Monday-Friday work week. Other possible schedules could include: 35 hour work week for three and a half months; 20 hours a week for six months, etc.
